Reviewer Doc
I was in Austin recently and after hearing about Pete Mesquite BBQ getting fairly high marks we put it on our list.  Tex and I always want to know about new places to add to our list of next reviews and Peete Mesquite was close so I knew I had to give it a try.
I arrived at Peete Mesquite for lunch around 11:30.  The front parking lot (as shown on the picture) only holds a few cars but there is plenty of parking in the back.  Walking to the back door you immediately notice the large metal pits in the back.  You walk inside and notice the wooden interior, checkerboard tables with ads all over them, and various pieces of Texas memorabilia on the walls.  I walked to the counter and placed my order.  I ordered the three meat combo (ribs, brisket and sausage) with two sides (pinto beans and coleslaw).
I asked the woman at the front if the potato salad or the coleslaw was better and she told me she made the coleslaw so I told her I would give it a try.  After paying for the meal I headed to the condiment bar for pickles, onions and a banana pepper.  I didn’t notice at the time but jalapenos are available.  You need to pay for them at the counter.  They also have warm sauce at the condiment bar and the room temperature sauce can be found at your table.  I sat down at the table and immediately picked up a rib since it looked so good.  The rib did not disappoint.  It had a good smoky flavor and it was very tender.
It stuck to the bone just enough (just the way I like it).  The sausage was also very good.  It was juicy and I ate most of it without the sauce.  The brisket was lacking a little on this trip.  I ordered it from the fatty end but it was still a little dry.  It had a good flavor but a little too dry for my taste.  The sauce was very good as well.  It had a good tangy flavor and worked well with all three meats.  The sides were a little above average.  The beans were decent but the coleslaw was a little bland for my taste.  I am glad we got there when we did because when we left there was a line out the door of patrons wanting to get some good mesquite smoked BBQ.

Bottom Line Overall Peete Mesquite BBQ was darn good. There were a few things that were not great on this visit but overall it was worth the trip.  I will be back to Peete Mesquite sometime in the near future.  It was one of the better BBQ joints I have been to in a while.
